POETRY OUT LOUD -
COUNTY FINALS COMPETITION
Jan. 26, 2025, at Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center, 3pm
Have you ever stood in front of a microphone, heart racing, palms sweating, mind focused, facing a panel of judges? That’s what nine Trinity County High School students will be experiencing during the Poetry Out Loud competition this Sunday, January 26 at 3 p.m. at the Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center. One of those nine students will be Mercedes Thao, the 2024 winner from Hayfork High, a returning champion. When asked about her journey to Sacramento to compete in the state competition she smiled widely and said “It felt really encouraging to go down to Sacramento and get out of my comfort zone. I wouldn’t say it was better or worse than local, but it was a different level of competition. I’m definitely more confident at home but it’s exciting to see different, new interpretations of my performance. I had a complete stranger come up to me and tell me how much he enjoyed my piece. I also loved watching and learning from performers from so many different backgrounds.”
Trinity County Arts Council invites the public to Trinity County’s Annual Poetry Out Loud Recitation Competition, Sunday January 26 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center. High school students from Hayfork High School, Trinity High School, and RISE Academy will recite poetry for a chance to win the Trinity County Poetry Out Loud Championship, and go on to the state and national competitions and a chance to win over $10,000 in scholarships. Poetry Out Loud is an annual nationwide program provided in Trinity County schools through partnership by the Trinity County Arts Council, California Arts Council, Poetry Foundation, and National Endowment for the Arts. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. (pictured is the Trinity County Champion for 2024, Hayfork High School's Mercedes Thao) |

The Trinity County Arts Council would like to carry forward a practice of recognizing the original caretakers of these Sacred Lands within and throughout the Trinity region. We acknowledge and offer gratitude to these indigenous ancestors, and present-day relations of the Nor-Rel Muk Wintu Nation and those tribal people who grace the North State – Maidu, Miwok, Hoopa, and Yurok. We acknowledge their stewardship of these lands and uplift their legacies as they continue to build and sustain their culture and practices today and for seven generations.
