In this strange year of 2021, people may ask “What’s happening with the Festival of Light?” Will this crafts event, which has been on the second Saturday of November since 2008, be another loss, in this year of COVID? We remember 2008 as another year remarkable for a big loss, the removal of Arts and Music from the California State elementary school curriculum. Pam Yearout and Elizabeth Watson felt that was unacceptable and decided that something must be done. So they produced the first Festival of Light Art & Crafts Event, raising money for arts and music lessons for elementary school age children.
The Festival of Light Art & Fine Crafts Event has grown over the years, to become a yearly event presenting a magical world of fantastic North State arts and crafts vendors for holiday gift buying, with the comfort of a hot soup lunch, the thrill of possibly winning an amazing Dutch Auction prize, the delight of taking home a delectable sweet from the bake sale, and best of all, inspired recitals by the youth who benefit from this great event.
Will we have to miss it this year? No! say the Trinity Arts Council Board and the Festival of Light Committee. We will go virtual!
Taylor Aglipay will be producing, with the Trinity Arts Council, a 90 minute livestreamed event on the second Saturday of November, the 14th, from noon to 1:30. The event will feature children’s recitals, interspersed with short presentations of vendors selling a variety of arts and crafts items and links to where you can buy their work. Tune in on FB: Trinity County Arts Alive or youtube.com/c/Trinity County Arts.
Taylor and Danyel Aglipay have taught students for years via FOL scholarship funds, and have presented their students for recitals for the annual FOL. Their students speak out. “What got me to play music was an interest to play the soundtrack to a movie I liked on the piano…” said Sunny Martinez. “I feel like a scientist at his desk when I’m playing classical music, and I feel satisfied when playing show tune music.” Beatrice says “I was excited to play an instrument to learn something new and how to make music. Playing music makes me feel happy.”
A socially distanced and covid safe live event at the Barking Mad Art Studio, 555 Main Street, Weaverville will showcase the Dutch Auction with items on display and tickets sold from 10 – 4 on Thursday November 12 and Friday, November 13 and from 10 – 1 on Saturday, November 14. The winning tickets will be pulled starting at 1:00 and the winners announced on the live-streamed event starting at 1:30. U-Rok Bakery will be on hand from 11 – 2 each day with a variety of scrumptious baked goods and a hot soup lunch to go.
