Paula Masterman Beading Workshops
The Trinity County Arts Council recently sponsored several bead classes taught by bead artist, Paula Masterman. Paula taught several students how to make necklace pouches using tapestry ribbon and embellishing them with beads and silk ribbon embroidery, an old fashioned technique that is finding new life with this design. She also taught a class featuring a beaded necklace using a Russian spiral technique. Paula chose both of these designs because they were easy to learn and students would have time to make necklaces and use the techniques in their personal projects.

Alchemical Mandala Workshop
On November 7th, the Arts Council welcomed 27 women to the workshop. The 6 hour experience was all that we had hoped for. Various media was used in the workshop, including colored pencils, markers, collage, and found objects. All materials and refreshments were provided by the Arts Council. Workshop participants produced at least three types of Mandalas that they will treasure.
| A little More |
The Mandala is a form of sacred art that connects with the inner psyche. Throughout the ages diverse cultures have used the circular design motif of the Mandala to facilitate traditions of initiation, healing, spirituality, revelation of meaning and purpose, and connection to the cosmic rhythms of the universe. Another method to gain access to inner wisdom is Alchemy, practiced originally by the ancient alchemists to change base metal into gold. This system of transmuting substances is now seen as a metaphorical or symbolic means of aiding us in our stages of life transformation. Merging the art form of the Mandala with different stages of Alchemy can help us gain access to our unconscious process, leading to a fascinating adventure of self-discovery.
The Alchemical Mandala workshop introduced the participants to insightful ways to develop the individual artistic process and embark upon an inward journey to explore more of the creative self. No prior knowledge, experience, or artistic ability is needed by participants to enjoy and gain benefits from attending the workshop. The workshop was presented by Catherine Davidson, Ph.D., co-author of The Alchemical Woman and Professor of Counseling Psychology at National University.
